In this case we do need to change the tense, so “have been”, that is in present perfect, must be reported as “had been/’d been”, which is past perfect (that’s why we use the past participle of the verb to be). That means that the statement Carlos said “we have been very busy” can be reported as Carlos said we’d been very busy (if the listener is included) or Carlos said they’d been very busy (if the listener is not included).

Because would doesn´t change for reported speech so it stays the same as in direct speech and the verb liked in simple past shifts back to past perfect

The first one is that when we use “here” in Direct Speech we change it to “there” when reported.
The second one is that when we use “this weekend” in Direct Speech we change it to “that weekend” when reported.
So the statement can be reported Carl said they were having a great time there that weekend.

/ September 22, 20154.It´s true because as “might” is in direct speech you can´t change it to “may”, you have to leave it with the same modal verb “might”. You can only change it to “may” when “might” is in the indirect speech.
