Maria Paula Alvarez
/ September 22, 2015False.
The correct report is: Carlos said (that) they had been very busy.
The subject and the tense change.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good Maria Paula, though you missed to explain the tense change. 🙂
Ana María Bedoya
/ September 22, 2015It is false. In this case we do need to change the tense, so “have been”, that is in present perfect, must be reported as “had been/’d been”, which is past perfect (that’s why we use the past participle of the verb to be). That means that the statement Carlos said “we have been very busy” can be reported as Carlos said we’d been very busy (if the listener is included) or Carlos said they’d been very busy (if the listener is not included).
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Very good answer Ana. You don’t need to explain the part of the listener. The most important here is the tense and the pronoun change. 😀
Marianella Burgos
/ September 22, 2015It is false
It can be reported Gloria said her dad would go to the movies if he had liked them.
Because would doesn´t change for reported speech so it stays the same as in direct speech and the verb liked in simple past shifts back to past perfect
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good try, but I believe you didn’t read the PDF file. It says that you cannot change certain kinds of conditionals like this one. So the result clause does not change to past perfect.
laura riveros
/ September 22, 2015True, the direct statement luz said, “we must find a solution.” Can’t be reported Luz said they must find a solution, it can be reported Luz said they had to find a solution
Valentina Triana
/ September 22, 2015It`s true, because we can’t say that. We say, Luz said that they had to find a solution because we have to change must to had to.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good work! 🙂
Valentina arenas
/ September 22, 2015False , because when you transform that sentence into indirect speech you have to use the verb have in past and the rest of teh sentence stays the same. So the correct sentece will be : carlos said we’d been very busy
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good try Vale. It is not just changing the verb “have”; you need to tell the tense. See Ana’s answer! 🙂
Sofia Marin
/ September 22, 20154. (T) This statement is true because, the verb might is used, and this modal verb never change when being reported
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good work Sofi! Just a little correction.
…and this modal verb never changeS…
Isabella morales
/ September 22, 2015The answer 4 is true because when you have might in the direct speech, yo keep it the same in the indirect speech
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good work Isa 🙂
Just a little correction:
…you keep it the same in the indirect speech
Melissa Hernandez
/ September 22, 2015The statement 3 is false because even though the change in tense is correct there are two mistakes:
The first one is that when we use “here” in Direct Speech we change it to “there” when reported.
The second one is that when we use “this weekend” in Direct Speech we change it to “that weekend” when reported.
So the statement can be reported Carl said they were having a great time there that weekend.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015PERFECT! 😮 😯
Sofía Corredor
/ September 22, 2015False. The correct way is: “My dad said he WILL (not would) go to the movies if he liked them. ” “Gloria said her dad WOULD (not will) go to the movies if he like (not likes) them.”
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Sorry Sofi! 😦
See my reply to Nella!
Alejandra
/ September 22, 20154.It´s true because as “might” is in direct speech you can´t change it to “may”, you have to leave it with the same modal verb “might”. You can only change it to “may” when “might” is in the indirect speech.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Very good answer Ale! Only a few corrections. 🙂
It´s true because as “might” is in direct speech[,] you can´t change it to “may”, you have to leave it with the same modal verb “might”.
You can only change it to “may” when “might” is in the indirect speech. This last part can be confusing.Juliana Amador
/ September 22, 2015False.
The correct form will be : Carlos said they had been very bussy.
We change the “have been” that is is present perfect to “had been” that is past perfect.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015A bit late Juli!
Good work! 🙂
María José Moreno
/ September 22, 2015it is true. because when you change must into a indirect speech, you use “had to” not “must”. so the correct sentence will be: luz said ( that ) they had to find a solution.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good work Majo! 🙂
Melissa Parra Torres
/ September 22, 2015it’s true. you can’t replace: Luz said, “We must find a solution” by: Luz said they must find a solution. it would be replaced by: “Luz said that they had to find a solution”
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good! 🙂 but you have to tell why!
Laura Sofia Miranda Arevalo
/ September 22, 2015The answer for the statement #4 is true, because when we turn a statement that is with direct speech to indirect speech might stays the same, it doesn’t change.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good answer! 🙂
Valentina Cadavid
/ September 22, 2015It is false . because you don’t change would in a reported speech , the correct form will be: Gloria said her dad would go to the movies if he had liked them
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good try Vale 🙂
See my reply to Nella!
laura
/ September 22, 2015(False.)
It can be reported as: Gloria said that her dad would go the movies if he liked them.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 23, 2015Your comment is in the wrong post. Please see your class’s comments.
Valentina Esparza
/ September 22, 2015false.
In indirect speech we cant use will,,the sentence also will be with would . the correct form will be :Gloria said her dad would go to the movies if he likes them.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Sorry Vale 😦 See my reply to Nella please!
Natalia Lizcano
/ September 22, 2015False. This statement can´t be reported using the word here because it´s necessary to use the word there instead of here in order for the sentence to have sense.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 22, 2015Good but you missed one part! See Melissa H’s answer!
Vanessa Hernandez
/ September 22, 20153. (False) This statement is not correct because in a reported speech, you have to change some words, in this case, you have to change here to there and this weekend to that weekend.
-Correction: Carl said they were having a great time there that weekend.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 23, 2015Good work Vane! 🙂
Sophia Harb
/ September 23, 20153.False.
When Carl went to England, he said, “We are having a great time here this weekend”. This statement can be reported Carl said they were having a great time there that weekend.
juanpablovanegas
/ September 23, 2015Good try Sophi. You had to explain why you made that change.
