Irony in videos 9C

Hi grade 9C girls, As we have studied ironic humor, you are going to look for videos where irony can be perceived. Similarly, to what has been done in class, you will look for a video that contains this kind of irony and analyze it to see how it is portrayed. Your analysis will be a comment on the blog with the link to the video and your own analysis. This analysis must be a 50-word-long text and be based on one ironic use of humor. That is, you must identify ONE SENTENCE or SITUATION where irony is depicted and explain clearly why you consider it is ironic. You must also tell the exact time where the ironic sentence or situation is found by telling their minutes and seconds. After you comment, each of you has to comment to two of your classmates. You must provide feedback on your classmates’ analysis, if you agree or disagree, if there are language use mistakes, and any other aspects you wish to mention. An example is provided below: Video link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L7h_sho7TQ In the video, Fry goes to a bank and wants to withdraw some money from his account. He had $1.93 but since he had slept for a thousand years, the interests he earns for that time profits 4.5 billion dollars making him very rich. He begins spending the money now that he is a billionaire. At 1:25 in the video, Fry, Lila and Bender, pay for The Mona Lisa’s picture, apparently to hang it somewhere in his house we can suppose as the audience. But then, the person who sells the painting, places it on catapult and throws the painting very high. Then, Lila, Fry and Bender shoot the painting with laser guns as one does with plastic birds in shooting practice. The irony here is that Fry is so rich that he can pay for a very expensive painting, not to mention it is perhaps invaluable as it is nowadays, can you tell what it would be in a thousand years?

The whole movie is based in a complete situational irony because as it is supposed to be, monsters scare children and in the movie they work in scaring children, but monsters are scared about children. When boo gets into the “monsters city” she creates a scandal in the whole city, all the monsters are scared about her. This is why we can consider the movie completely ironic.

I love your skirt- Regina George

In this video it is an ironic situation, when Regina said to a girl that her skirt was very nice and vintage but at the minute she criticize her.
It is an irony sentence because she really do not mean that her skirt was beautiful, she mean the opposite. She was kind of sarcastic.
It was a verbal irony in which she was kind of Hurful.

In this Simpson´s episode I found three ironic things.
The first one is that the devil in this episode is Ned Flanders and it is ironic because in the normal chapters he is the one that loves Jesus, the typical guy that goes to church and the one who tries to stay away from the devil and the sins.
The second one is that at the beginning Homer won the devil´s game by not eating the whole donut, but then , when he was in his house he found at his fridge the donut piece with a lot of signals that said that he couldn´t eat that, and ironically he does, so he had to go to hell.
And the third one is that when he was on hell, his punishment was to eat all the donuts of all the world as a torture, but at the end he really enjoy it; he enjoyed the devils punishment, it was like a prize for him.

I agree with you Cami, and I really liked the irony you found about Ned Flander’s, because it’s evident, through the hole program, that he’s very religious and believes in heaven and hell, and he is the devil in this episode. And I liked how many different ironies you found, that you didn’t mention just one.

In this episode of Hannah Montanna is a complete dramatical irony. Lily is Hanna Montannas best friend, but she doesn’t know and in all the video she is really realy excited, and that is the best day of her life because she is in front of Hannah Montanna when actually Hanna Montanna is miley and she sees her everyday and that are best friends. Is dramatical irony because, we [ the viewers] know what the character (Lily) doesnt know.

I completely agree with you cami, but it is also an irony that Lily knows Miley very good because they are best friends, and se didn’t recognize her only because she puts some cream in her face.

In this video we can se a situational irony, because Homer is in his house and starts celebrating about him being a smart person, and while doing this he burned his diploma from high school and produced a fire on the house, so its an irony because he did a really dumb action which is completely opposite of being smart.

The irony is seen froom second 50- to 1:30 because the man talking is asking why for instance the USA doesn’t try a dictatorship, he starts talking about what America would be like under a dictatorship, thing is the description he gives is much like the current situation in this country. In minute 1:15 he says ” I know this is hard for you americans to imagine, but please try” when in reality it is not hard at all and they are the ones that understand it best.

The video is ironic becuase the women that are seeing the guy think he is very handsome. The start to flirt with the guy until they get his attention. In the moment the guy starts to talk they realize the funny voice he has. Its ironic that a man with such a body has that squeaky voice. It is situational irony, as the voice and the way they react is ironical acording to the way the guy inicially looked.

This video, which is a part of the movie “Mr. Bean- The beach”, is ironic because when Mr. Bean finally gets to the beach, the moment which he was waiting for so long to get in and swim, he finds with a man sitting there “watching” the sea and enjoying the weather. This surprised Mr. Bean, because he wasn´t properly dressed for swimming, he had a suit and needed to put on a swim suit, but because there was a man, he couldn´t just get naked and put on the swim suit. So Mr. Bean took a long time to put on the swim suit over his suit, and then taking off the suit, and when he finally did it, the man of the beach stood up and went away, Mr bean realized that he was a blind man. So this is the ironic situation because Mr. Bean made an effort on changing his outfit without getting naked in front of the man, but he could get naked and the man wouldn´t even noticed it because he is blind.

The situation is ironic because in the first part of the vido, he’s actually about winning an emy wich is a big deal for any actor, and he’s nonchalant about it, he describes it as a loose loose situation because he had to go up the stage and talk, then he says he’d actually had to write ¨mother¨ for not forgetting to put her in his speech. Later in the interview he’s compared to a baby because of his habits. He tells about his old jobs and ridiculice them and then taking them serious again. And by the ending of the interviw he gets scared by a giant spider while he was saying he wasnt.

In this video we can identify a situational irony, as in this episode Squidward and Spongebob had to stay working late at night, and Squidward is irritated about Spongebob’s enthusiasm so he tells him a scary story about the “Hash-Slinging Slasher”, but it was not true, and then they see a misterious guy that looked just as Squidward described the “Hash-Slinging Slasher”, so it is an ironic situation, because what he said became true an instead of scaring Spongebob, he was the one who got scared, because of his own story. In the minute 3:12 Squidward is telling the story and in the minute 9:07 te misterious guy gets out of the bus, in front of the Krusty Krab.

Ratatouille is a movie in which situational irony is shown constantly because in normal life we have the idea that rats look for trash every time, that they are not clean and that they are ugly, but in this movie the idea that we have from rats is not shown, here they show us completely the opposite because the rat all the time wash his hands, it’s very delicate and cook very good.

    • Ratatouille the whole movie is ironic because is possible that a mouse knows how to cook, but also because is an animal that disgust us.

I agree also with your example Lauris, because remember that at the end of the movie Anton Ego says: “(…)In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau’s famous motto: ‘Anyone can cook.’ But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau’s, who is, in this critic’s opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France. I will be returning to Gusteau’s soon, hungry for more.” So we can identify the irony when the most demanding critic that believed Gusteau was going to close, agrees and understand the idea that a rat can cook and that “a great artist can come from anywhere”

Drake and Josh are fighting over a fight they had when they were little over a foam finger. Josh claims that Drake got the last foam finger and hit Josh starting the fight while Drake claims that Josh was really rude to him and he got mad over not buying the last foam finger starting the fight. The irony in the situation is that at the end of the episode they found out that neither of them started the fight , the one who started the fight was Megan (minute 15:28 to 17:28) , so they have been blaming each others for years when actually Megan was the cause of all the fight over the foam finger.

  13. Trough all the video we watch a verbal Ironi because when the old woman, whitch is the mom of the blond one , tell her that she think she is pregnant, is REALLY ironic because a woman of her age can’t be pregnant, and it is more ironic when the blond one tell she can’t stand that situation. At the end the old woman realize she has menopause. All the video is ironic

The ironic moment began in 0:40 To 1:06, its ironic because when jacob(Ryan Gosling) gives the drink to Hannah(Emma Stone) she drinks it and when she finish it she says ‘its not my drink’ and later she takes the drink of Jacob and drinks it very quickly as the other one, when she finally drinks both liquors she says again ‘its not my favorite’. its ironic because she doesn’t like the drink but nevertheless she drinks it both.
