    12. What Norris and William had in common was that both agreed that the realism subject should be the ordinary people

    • Good work Cami. They were both realists. Remember also that Norris considered that Howells was a little too sweet or “smiling” in his depiction or reality.

Melville’s perception of the war was a bad one because it made his pessimism grow. He was fascinated by war tough, and he expressed it in some of his poems about fighters that were heroes, he focused basically on humanity’s basic evil.

    11) Mark Twain was the famous writer who put regionalism and realism together. His novels talked in a satirical way about society and it’s problems. In one novel named “Huckleberry Finn” he made a mixture of some injustices present in pre-civil war with a detail full exposure of American landscapes, which is a clear example of the use of both: Realism and Regionalism.

    1. What was Whitman perception of the war when he went to Virginia in 1862?

Whitman perception of the war when he went to virginia in 1862 was like full or hope and optimistic because while he was giving his service in the hospital, he has the opportunity to see the soldiers courage during war and he change his old perception about this subject.

14.) Henry James is considered a psychological novel writer because unlike other realists of his time, James went deeper into the study of human behavior than to blame it on “primitive, almost animalistic instincts” like the other writers did. He was known for his interest in complicated psychological situations and his distinction between the American and European societies’ behaviors.

5.There was so little literary work about the civil war because there were few American writers how experience war in first hand and a product of war are all novels and poems of people who participated in it. Some examples of different writers who couldn’t go to war for different reasons where Emerson who stay at home knitting for soldiers , Thoreau who died , Hawthorne who also died , and many others.
Also in that time there wasn’t a literary form that could express the horrors of the civil war in an accurate way.

    • Good work Lole. A few precisions though.

Writers how? do you mean “who

It is also important to clarify that Emerson wasn’t really “knitting”. It is a metaphoric way of saying what he was really doing.

    8. The difference between Romantic novel and Realistic novel was that romantics used idealism to talk about life while realistics talk about life in a rough way. Also, romantics used fantastic heroes in their stories while realistics used normal people in normal places.

    • Ok Lau. I know. I think the PDF I uploaded was a shorter version of the article. Other authors were Daniel Defoe who wrote “Robinson Crusoe”; George Eliot, who was in fact a woman, wrote many famous novels. Honoré de Balzac wrote the Comédie humaine which consists of 91 finished works (stories, novels or analytical essays) and 46 unfinished works (some of which exist only as titles).

The two naturalists that are mentioned in the article are Frank Norris and Emile Zola.
They are called like that because they relied their fiction on scientific disciplines as sociology or pshycology and because of this they have many different characteristics; for example for them, human behavior was determined by forces beyond the individual’s power, like biology or envirionment and because of this they tended to look at human life as a grim losing battle; also their characters usually only had limited choices and motivations, since human beings were totally subject to the natural laws of the universe like animals; So as we can see naturalists are called like this because they are directly related to science and its ideas since the naturalist’s ideology is based on it.

  11. 10. Realism and regionalism are different because, realism was given as a rejection to the imaginary world of romanticism. Realist authors wanted to talk about ordinary life, not escape from it. The attribute of accepting the fact of life, for example characters appear in their ordinary life. In the other hand regionalism talks about specific geographic setting, they use vivid descriptions of the landscape and capture the essence of life in the various regions; they were realistic but also unrealistic and sentimental. But they are related because regionalism was based in realism; both try to show haw was life in that century; regionalism was a consequence of realism with more focus on a particular setting and its influence over characters.

The kind of novel that could show how war was really like is the realistic novel, but in that time in the united states it had not been yet fully developed, because of that the great novel ? “the red bedge of courage” had to wait to be written.
